Thinking about an apprenticeship?

What's an apprenticeship all about?

An apprenticeship simply describes a type of training where you can achieve a national qualification while you work. You are employed as an apprentice and learn a 'trade' while you are working. Which means you earn as you learn [as your employer pays you a wage].

What does it involve?

Apprentice training involves a mix of practical, hands-on learning and formal, academic study [including exams]. This learning takes place 'on-the-job', as you carry out normal, everyday tasks in the workplace alongside your qualified workmates and 'off-the-job', as you attend night school, block courses or learn through correspondence.

Your skills and knowledge are 'assessed' against 'unit standards', which describe the skills and knowledge you must have in order to achieve the qualification. Once you have achieved all the unit standards that make up the qualification, a National Certificate is awarded and you've completed your apprenticeship.  For example, an electronic security apprenticeship takes [on average] up to three years to complete.
