THE BEST LAID PLANS

Looking to deliver top-notch professional service, National Security in Avondale has taken up the challenge of national qualifications training.

Motivated by the desire to deliver the best possible service to their clients and the demands of a competitive market, Harry Singh, General Manager, and Ricky Anand, Manager, were on the look out for credible qualifications for their staff.

Harry Singh, General Manager, National Security

“We heard about ETITO from others in the industry and then went to the website to see exactly what was on offer. Once we made contact it was a matter of discussing the best possible options with John McGregor the ETITO client relationship manager.”

The decision was made to undertake a pilot programme with a small number of their staff through training provider C4. At present, National Security have five employees working towards the National Certificate in Security [Level 4]. Ricky and Harry have also embarked on the National Certificate in Security Management [Supervision] [Level 5] and are looking to have staff trained as workplace assessors once they have completed the level 4 qualification.

The advantage of having such a small group start the training is that National Security was able to see what’s needed to implement national qualifications training successfully, before committing to larger numbers.

Harry says much of the material contained in the qualifications isn’t new to staff, but going through it gives them a chance to revise and refresh their approach to it.

“For our staff, a lot of it’s reinforcing what they already know and this is giving them extra confidence in how they approach their jobs.”

Even at this early stage Harry has noticed there has been a change in his staff’s work habits, even down to the extra attention paid to their uniforms.

Another benefit he has seen is the improvement in the incident reports from site visits.  “Before the training started the guards would write one or two lines, but now they’re going into a lot more detail. The clients are having a lot more of their questions answered which is great.”

Ricky says their staff are also learning how to better protect themselves. “The training has changed our thinking, and it’s starting to change our actions, we’re now more aware of a lot of things.”

And what advice does Harry have for others looking to take on national qualifications training? “Look into it, and make sure your staff already have a good knowledge of the industry for them to gain the full benefits of the training. Talk to ETITO and make yourself aware of all the options available to you. Be proactive and ask questions.”
