How to recruit an apprentice
A good apprentice needs to be able to cope with learning both theory and practical skills. So when considering potential apprentices, ask yourself:
- Does the individual have a good attitude?
- Do they show a keen interest to work in the industry?
- Have they done any work experience or part-time work that might indicate a keen interest to work in the industry?
- Do they have good maths, science and English achievement [preferably to the level of School Certificate or NCEA Level 1]?
- Do they have good practical skills?
- Do they enjoy working with their hands?
- Did they do woodwork or metalwork at school?
- Do they have a sport or hobby that might reflect a keen interest to work in the industry?
Some other good indicators:
- Have they completed a pre-employment course?
- Did they study the National Certificate in Electronics Technology [NCET] at school? This is a basic electrical and electronics course designed by ETITO, which can be taken as an elective subject at High School
- Are they members of the ETITO Bright Sparks Club? This is a web-based club that supports and inspires those young people with an interest in all things electrical and electronic www.brightsparks.org.nz
If you require more detail from your potential apprentice, you can also try:
- Giving them a short 20 minute aptitude test. For a copy of the ETITO Apprentice Aptitude Test, please click on the link below
- Organising a small, practical test of your own in the company workshop. For example show them how to make off a lead and see how easily they can complete the process
