Offender Management

How national qualifications training works

The Training System

National qualifications training for the offender management sector is designed for training and assessment to take place in the workplace, however, some generic unit standards can be achieved off-job. Qualifications can be made available to all corrections officers and candidates are supported in the achievement of their qualifications by trained facilitators, assessors and regional training officers.

Trainees are typically able to achieve each level of the qualification in a two year period. This timeframe can be reduced if a candidate is able to show prior learning relevant to the role.

ETITO Support

New Zealand prisons and ETITO work together to manage the training, assessment, and credit registration for trainees. ETITO also has dedicated staff to advise on and support assessment and moderation activity.

As the registered standard setting body for the offender management sector, ETITO has responsibility for:

  • Reviewing new and existing qualifications
  • Providing quality assurance through moderation
