How national qualifications training works

The training system

National qualifications training and assessment is carried out through a combination of workplace-based and external assessment through an accredited training provider.

Some security guard services companies discover that their existing in-house training programmes cover the majority of national qualifications training. In these cases, employees simply need to be assessed as competent for their skills to be recognised and a national qualification awarded.

There are three different ways of achieving unit standards:

  • Those unit standards that require an accredited training provider to train, assess and report credits to the New Zealand Qualifications Authority [NZQA] on a company's behalf
  • Those unit standards that ETITO recommends are trained and assessed by an accredited training provider or under special circumstances by a workplace assessor
  • Those unit standards that can be assessed as individuals carry out their normal 'on-the-job' by a workplace assessor. Companies may choose to use an accredited training provider to assess these units

ETITO support

ETITO provides advice, information and a variety of tools to assist in the decision to choose and implement national qualifications training in a security guard services company. This includes an introduction to national qualifications training, an implementation planning guide, assessor training and materials and national quality assurance mechanisms for assessment. We also have dedicated staff to advise on and support implementation of the national qualifications training and assessment programme.

To assist with workplace-based assessment, ETITO provides a range of assessment guides and tools and provides a subsidy towards the costs of training a member of your team as an assessor

Once a Registered Training Workplace [RTW] contract is established between ETITO and a security guard services company, ETITO is able to provide a subsidy towards the costs of training and assessment.
