Employer's role

Signing the Training Agreement

An ETITO apprenticeship is formalised with an ETITO registered Training Agreement, which is signed by both you and the apprentice. It indicates the training programme you have both selected and is linked to the apprentice's employment agreement.

With a Training Agreement, the employer agrees to:

  • Supervise the apprentice throughout the apprenticeship in accordance with relevant industry requirements
  • Ensure workplace assessment is carried out by an ETITO registered workplace assessor
  • Support the apprentice through all training required to complete the training programme
  • Release the apprentice for any off-job courses

Assessment

There are two types of assessment. Off-job assessment is carried out by the training provider and on-job assessment takes place during the apprentice's normal working day.

When an apprentice feels that they can demonstrate competence in the skills they have been learning, they are assessed. The Electrotechnology industry believes the employer, a supervisor or an experienced tradesperson is the best person to carry out assessment.

Workplace assessors must:

  • Hold the relevant trade qualifications and have a minimum of three year's supervisory experience
  • Be trained and registered with ETITO as an assessor

A Workplace Logbook or other assessment tool is used to record workplace assessments. A Workplace Logbook lists a range of everyday tasks that an apprentice completes on the job and covers the on-job unit standards in the National Certificate. These can be assessed in any order depending on the nature of the work the apprentice is doing.
