How national qualifications training works
Assessment
When a trainee feels that they are competent in the skills outlined in the unit standards, they can be assessed for competency and credits towards completion of a qualification can be awarded. Assessment involves the collection and recording of evidence that demonstrates an individual's competence in each unit standard they are seeking credit for.
This evidence can be gathered by observing normal day-to-day work, from security guard services company records, team leader's/manager's verification, questionnaires completed, and verbal discussions.
Recognition of Prior Learning [RPL]
The National Certificate in Security [Level 3] can also be assessed through Recognition of Prior Learning [RPL]. This is a process used to recognise prior learning, knowledge, skills and experience and involves collecting a portfolio of evidence for assessment that covers the requirements of the unit standards that make up the qualifications.
RPL is also used for assessor training or those individuals looking to gain a national qualification outside of a Registered Training Workplace [RTW] Training Agreement.
Registered Workplace Assessors
Assessments for some unit standards can be carried out in the workplace by trained and registered workplace assessors or by an accredited training provider. A workplace assessor can be a senior security guard with at least two year's experience, supervisor, training staff or manager.
To become an ETITO registered assessor, individuals need to hold the qualification they are assessing, have gained the unit standard 4098 and be working for the RTW company.
Assessment Support
ETITO offers security guard services companies a wide range of resources, tools and dedicated staff to advise and support the management of assessment. All ETITO guides are developed in consultation with representatives from the security industry.
