Electrotechnology Employers
All about apprenticeships
Every day electrical and allied trade professionals are building their businesses and safeguarding the industry's future by training apprentices. Apprentices are the lifeblood of the Electrotechnology industry.
An apprenticeship is a blend of academic theory and practical training covering the ‘key competencies' required to become a well-rounded tradesperson. Apprentices learn off-the-job with a training provider as well as in the workplace with their employer, as they carry out their daily work.
Apprenticeships today are built around a ‘competency based' system. ETITO has worked with industry to identify all of the skills a tradesperson needs to be competent. These competencies are then divided into specific unit standards [e.g. unit standard 2020 - Plan and install cable support systems]. In this way, all aspects of the job are firmly defined, and expressed as a series of standards that need to be achieved.
It's important to note that while a competency-based system isn't time-dependent, there is an expectation that apprentices will complete their qualification within a reasonable timeframe.
What's the first step?
Once you've found someone you want to take on as an apprentice, call us and we'll send you a Training Agreement.
Once you and your apprentice have both signed the Training Agreement and returned it to ETITO, we'll allocate them to a training provider for the off-job theory component of their learning.
We'll also issue them with a Workplace Logbook for the workplace learning component, and arrange for you to be registered as a workplace assessor after a one-hour training session.
You'll both receive copies of the Training Agreement, and the employer is invoiced for the annual training management fee.
